The city of Colorado Springs is proud to host the U.S. Olympic Committee as well as a few winter training facilities. In honor of the role it plays in supporting Olympic athletes, the town will host a special event to help celebrate the start of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The race takes place this Friday, February 7, 2014, beginning at 6:15 pm. Registration for the race begins one hour prior to the start, or participants can also complete an application online. The route is approximately a one-mile loop through the downtown area, and all runners will receive a free cup of hot chocolate upon crossing the finish line courtesy of Orchard Ovens Bakery.
Participants are also encouraged to wear glow-in-the-dark accessories and apparel while running the race. Spectators can bring glow sticks with them, and merchandise will also be available for purchase from local retailer Zeezos.
Other activities that are a part of the Sochi Olympics kickoff celebration include snowmobiling, ice skating, tobogganing and snowshoe races; a dog sled demonstration is planned as well. During these events, guests can view a live broadcast of the Sochi Olympic ceremonies via big screen television. Broadcasting of these ceremonies is provided by local television station KOAA. Local entertainers will take to the stage throughout the evening as well.
The event has received widespread support from community and business leaders alike. Colorado Springs is proud of its contribution to U.S. Olympic and Paralympics athletes, which is why town officials expect a high attendance at this special celebration. As such, plan to arrive early in order to obtain the best spots for parking and viewing the events.
